Sister "You know you want it" printed t-shirt, 1995

Kate Sylvester's first brand, Sister, was launched with her partner Wayne Conway, with no cash and just a few years' experience between the pair. They were "gloriously naive, optimistic and brave", opening their first shop in 1993. And while the early days were not easy, some attention grabbing antics and graphic design know-how from Wayne helped to ensure their success. Mandy Scott bought this t-shirt in 1995 from the Sister shop on Kitchener Street. "I was a second year student at Auckland University, only part time because I had given birth earlier that year. I first took my son to lectures when he was 11 days old. I also worked part-time at the Auckland Central Library where I wore the shirt a lot underneath a grey cardigan. I had been a punk-rocker earlier in my youth, but at that time I guess I was trying to explore a more fashionable and minimal aesthetic. Although looking back I was still wearing a huge amount of retro polyester as well as big black New Zealand army boots."
