Phoebe Videbeck Twist sequin detail knit dress, 2025

Designer Phoebe Videbeck writes: "This dress was made as part of my AUT graduate collection, where I looked at material culture and the production-consumption relationship through the lens of biographical objects of my family. Knitted on a 1974 domestic flatbed knitting machine, each sequin was inserted by hand. I was inspired by Walter Benjamin's writing, particularly 'The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction', and developed this technique when exploring methods of knitting that could not be replicated industrially.

The graphic was developed by scanning a toile which twisted around the waist, translating this through Photoshop into a workable colour map for a trompe l'oeil effect."
