Sandpiper Miró style abstract print shirtwaist dress, 1970s

Juliet Stimpson found this Sandpiper dress in an op-shop for $6, and now provides us with an excellent example of a garment made in NZ from an imported designer fabric. The Italian textile features an abstract print with a watercolour textured background, and amorphous, atomic shapes inspired by the surrealist art of Joan MirĂ³, on an opaque polyester chiffon.

The dress itself has a button front, elastic waist and billowing sleeves, which is accented with a self-fabric tie at the neck. The result is a classic and comfortable day dress which lets the fabric speak for itself!
