Lynne Dunphy Clash of the Tartans ensemble, 2022

Designer of this piece Lynne Dunphy writes: "This was my entry into Art 'n' Tartan wearable art competition in 2022 and it won the prize for Most Creative Use of Tartan. It's all about identity and belonging, inspired by my fascination with the idea that tartan signified inclusion in a particular clan, and takes traditional Scottish dress into gender-bending territory. The theme comes out of my own search for identity as an adopted person. As a child, I had a Scottish friend, who wore her clan tartan. I was fascinated by the idea that fabric woven in particular colours and patterns signified belonging to a Scottish clan.

In the absence of much information about my background, I decided to make my own tartans. I handwove a series of imaginary tartans in a bright spectrum of colours and patterns that I love, stitched into a punky nod to traditional Scottish dress. The mask that also accompanies this ensemble denotes the unknown, being a mystery to oneself and others."
