LUMAI Nirut lace knit dress, 2019

The Nirut Lace Dress is rendered in a linen and cotton blended yarn with ties that fasten with ease over the shoulders. The dress is finished in the hem with tassels and cowrie shells. The lace pattern is reminiscent of the geometric patterns of the woven hauswin and was inspired by the bilum loop technique that is from Papua New Guinea. Kurt Payne developed the lace knit pattern and brought the dress to life.

This dress featured in the campaign for @project.twomile, an initiative in support of marginalised women who live in the squatter settlements of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea with the aim of empowering women and their families. Proceeds from the sale of Bilums directly help these women and their families.
