KNIT - Peggy square community blanket
Over the duration of the exhibition we invited people to gather at the exhibition for our daily ‘yarning circle’, to work on something of their own or to make a peggy square to contribute to this durational crafting project, a warm hug of a blanket to be auctioned for charity. Anyone from anywhere in Aotearoa or around the world was also invited to join in and create a 12cm x 12cm square using any technique they wanted. We receive 180 individual and unique pieces. A great variety in terms of their composition and their ‘squareness’. They were edged and harmonised to create this one off blanket that is being auctioned for the Lifewise Merge Cafe in August 2026. We thank all the participants in this project for their beautiful contribution to this kaupapa.

The blanket is currently on display at Auckland International Art Centre at 202 Parnell Rd, who have generously given you the chance to see it in person before placing a bid.
This reflection shows the heart behind the blanket: many hands, many stories & one shared wish to support a safer, warmer place for people experiencing homelessness. “I knitted a modest pile of peggy squares for the Knit Show. It was satisfying to produce a batch of squares. Seeing the finished blanket illustrates that the sum is greater than the parts.
