Karen Walker rugby knit blazer with ribbed cuffs, 1990s
Rugby knit was a fabric knitted in New Zealand by manufacturers such as Lane Walker Rudkin. It was not just used for rugby jerseys but also in fashion in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
As a tailored jacket made out of a knit fabric, it combines elements of both a bomber jacket and a blazer, and seems to be inspired by early 20th century sporting attire. While a little faded now, it would have been army green and mulberry – a pretty bold colour combination. The original colour of the green panels can be seen in the label image.
