Hand spun and knitted loafer slippers, 1980s

Like most of her generation, Diana Fletcher's mother, Mary Parrish learnt to knit as a child but taught herself to prepare fleece and spin in the 1970s after ending up with an Ashford spinning wheel. She crafted everything in her own very ‘hand spun’ style - it was just luck if the item she made happened to fit. These slippers for her son-in-law David are one of two pairs made in the 1980s from a 1950s pattern.
