Babs Radon floral dress with flounced sleeves, 1971

This Babs Radon dress belonged to Gayle Cullwick's mother, Gwen Hopwood. The classic cut of this dress, with its simple bodice, defined waist and A-line skirt provide an elegant form for the sheer fabric's bold floral print to take centre stage.

Both this print, and the flounce detail at the sleeve edge lend a youthful sensibility, which by this time was becoming a driving factor in the New Zealand market, and one that Radon had long aligned with, as herĀ wish was to bring a fresher, younger look to women who were seeking modern fashionable clothing.

In 1967, Barbara opened a retail outlet in Auckland as part of theĀ 246 Queen Street development. The boutique was the first Babs Radon retail outlet since its earliest days in Mt Eden, providing garments from past ranges as well as the newest lines direct from the Chancery Street workroom.
