Night flowers of the Pacific evening dress

In her autumn/winter 2006 collection, Night flowers of the Pacific, Liz Mitchell explores the dramatic influences that 19th century missionaries, whalers and traders had on the Polynesian women they met. The women quickly embraced the Christian religion and exchanged their uninhibited attire for prim, restrained, Victorian dress. Liz has long been interested in the history of fashion and the opulence of theatre design. In Night flowers of the Pacific, she explores the turbulent clash of ideas and values between two different cultures from opposite sides of the world.
