The Daily Telegraph in Napier claimed that in the summer of 1938 men who went to buy a new bathing suit were offered trunks if they were under 50 (12 February 1938, p.9).
This is the type of bathing suit that would have been available at the time. It has a white woven cotton belt, a silver buckle and an overskirt at the front. The brand, 'Canterbury', is written on a badge on one side along with a green fern frond.
