Hand-woven kaftan

Joyce Irving (née Mowbray) commissioned this dress for a tour of American universities in the late 1970s. She performed New Zealand poetry and prose, including some of her own poetry. The fabric was woven by textile artist Zena Abbott and the garment was made by costume designer Rohanna Hawthorne. Zena was one of the founding members of Brown's Mill where she sold her woven textured rugs and garments made from a range of materials.
